Why you shouldn't put computer repairs off

“If it’s working, don’t touch it” is a dangerous strategy when it comes to electronics. Over the years I’ve seen dozens of cases where a 150₪ problem turned into a 600₪+ repair simply because it had been put off.

The most common scenarios

Overheating → dead GPU

The laptop is hot and noisy — annoying, sure, but not critical, right? In reality the constant overheating is steadily destroying the solder under the chips on the motherboard.

  • Laptop clean: 150₪
  • GPU replacement: 400–700₪ (and not always possible)

HDD clicks → losing all your data

“The drive clicks now and then, but it still works.” The mechanical degradation of the heads isn’t an “every now and then” thing — it’s a countdown. The drive might keep going for another three hours or three weeks, but at some point it just won’t power up.

  • Drive replacement + data cloning: 200–300₪
  • Data recovery after drive failure: from 400₪, with no guarantee of results

Spilled-on laptop — “I let it dry out”

Powering a laptop back on after a spill, before it’s been professionally rinsed, is one of the most expensive mistakes you can make. Liquid eats through traces and contacts; oxidation keeps progressing even after the device has dried. A board that could have been saved for 300₪ on day one needs replacing within a few days — 800₪+.

  • Rinse straight after the spill: from 300₪
  • Motherboard repair after oxidation: from 600₪

A virus — “I’ll just close that window”

Adware or spyware on its own is unpleasant but tolerable. What’s much worse is when there’s a stealer behind it — a program quietly harvesting passwords for banks, email, messengers. By the time you notice anything is off, your data may already be compromised.

  • Virus cleanup: from 150₪
  • The fallout from leaked banking data: unpredictable

Why “it’ll sort itself out” doesn’t work

A computer is an engineered system, and wear and faults accumulate. It doesn’t “rest” over the weekend or “loosen up” on its own. Overheating, mechanical wear, corrosion — all of these progress, they don’t stabilise.

Catching things early gives you three advantages:

  1. Cheaper — a problem at the early stage is simpler and quicker to fix.
  2. Safer for your data — there’s less risk of losing files during the repair.
  3. Faster — no waiting on parts or complex recovery work.

Diagnostics are free

If you’re not sure how serious the issue is — bring it in or call. Diagnostics are free, and I’ll be honest about whether the repair is worth it or whether you’re better off replacing the device altogether.

I work in Haifa and across the entire north of Israel; on-site visits available.
