What happens if you don't clean your computer for 5 years

Dust is the number one enemy of any computer. Most owners don’t think about it until the machine starts roaring like a vacuum cleaner or shutting down out of nowhere. By that point some of the damage is usually already done.

What’s happening inside

The CPU and GPU are cooled by a fan that pushes air through a heatsink. Within a year or two of active use, the gaps between the heatsink fins get packed with dust and pet hair so densely that almost no air gets through.

The result: the CPU and GPU run 20–40°C hotter than they should.

The chain reaction

Overheating triggers a cascade:

  1. Thermal interface degradation. The thermal paste dries out and crumbles — heat transfer drops even further.
  2. Throttling. The CPU starts dropping its clock speed to avoid overheating — the computer feels noticeably slow.
  3. Solder damage. Repeated heating and cooling open up microcracks in the solder. The GPU starts to “lift” — artefacts on screen, freezes, blue screens.
  4. Capacitor failure on the motherboard — they bulge and lose capacitance.

In serious cases, replacing or re-balling the GPU costs 400–700₪. A clean would have cost 150₪.

How to tell it’s time

  • The fan runs at full speed even under light load
  • The case or the bottom of the laptop runs hotter than usual
  • The computer freezes or shuts down 10–20 minutes after powering on
  • In a monitoring app (such as HWiNFO) the idle CPU temperature is above 60–70°C

How often you should clean

Use conditionsInterval
No pets at home, occasional useEvery 2–3 years
Home with a cat or dogOnce a year
Daily heavy use, officeEvery 1–1.5 years
Machine sits on carpet or a soft surfaceEvery 6–8 months

What a professional clean covers

When I service a machine I take it fully apart, blow out and clear the heatsink, replace the thermal paste on the CPU and GPU and, where needed, the thermal pads on the power components. After reassembly I check temperatures under load.

A laptop or desktop clean in Haifa starts at 150₪ and usually takes 1–2 hours. Overheating diagnostics are free.
